Did you try to turn it off and on again?

by enricojost

A few days ago I replaced a VG224 which ran out of support with a VG310 – to keep the customers‘ fax devices in business – while having an active support contract.

Basically, I copied 90% of the old config and just optimized some settings after discussing with a co-worker. The VG310 was ready to get connected with the FXS RJ-21 connector. So I turned off the old 224 and switched the cabling towards the VG310.

On my CUCM there was SIP routing towards the new VG. Initially I ran into some „41 temporary failure“ messages in my RTMT, when I tried to call a fax line.

After some SIP Trunk reset this one was fine – somehow the SIP OPTIONS did not work in first place.

So here I am now: Calls are getting through to the VG310. I hear some ringings and recognize that the call is accepted (no ringing anymore) and then: – nothing –

No fax tone, no crackling, just nothing. So I checked the CUCM logs again – call is distributed to the VG310. I did some live logging on the VG and saw the SIP calls coming, after that I adust the logging to only show the analog messages :

debug vpm signal

From that perspective it looked fine as well . . .

So I had a call with my coworker again, as the customer needed his infrastructure working soon… obviously we thought about installing another iOS version on the VG or about wiresharks in the network, to check where audio might get lost.

At the end, I decided to try the most obvious but forgotten thing: turning the new gateway off. And on again 🙂

That’s it. No troubleshooting, no vendor case, no RFC reading.

Just reboot your stuff from time to time – or at least have in mind, that processes could get in stuck without telling it in any logfile 🙂

Cheers
